We are happy and proud to present GibbsCAM 2023! The development department continues to focus on strengthening the core of GibbsCAM, while introducing new technology in collaboration with Sandvik Coromant. GibbsCAM continues to be a leader in advanced machining center programming and offers CAM programming with the highest productivity.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

GibbsCAM 2023 includes a number of significant improvements in turning, including the highly efficient implementation of\u00a0Sandvik Coromants PrimeTurning<\/strong>TM<\/sup>strategies. These new cutting methods allow turning and facing in any direction, providing dramatic gains. The technology provides cycle time reductions of up to 50% and more than 500% increase in insert life. PrimeTurning uses the inclination of the insert for chip thinning in order to be able to take strong inserts. At the same time, cutting forces and heat are spread over a larger part of the cutting edge, which contributes to a longer service life. In addition, PrimeTurning adapts the feed rate (excellent when machining conical parts) to constantly manage chip thickness, ideal e.g. for unmanned machining.<\/p>\n

CoroTurn PrimeTurning, type A and B<\/h4>\n

GibbsCAM supports both tool types (CoroTurn\u00ae Prime Type-A with three 35\u00b0 corners for fine and roughing and CoroTurn\u00ae Prime Type-B with two strong corners for heavier roughing). Both use a small primary angle to improve surface finish. \u00c5ke Nilsson, global product application manager for turning tools at Sandvik Coromant AB, comments: \"We have now extensively tested PrimeTurningTM\u00a0<\/sup>cycle in GibbsCAM, and it's really good. The development team at Gibbs has taken an innovative approach to it all and I have to say they have done a fantastic job with the technology implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vibration damping<\/h4>\n

Further improvements in turning include a new ability to control cutting-load-variation <\/strong>This is to minimize resonance\/vibrations<\/strong> and improve chip breaking during turning. This type of technology is now offered in a number of different CNC machines and has slightly different names depending on the control system. In Okuma the function is called variable spindle speed, in Citizen it is called low frequency vibration. VoluTurn roughing cycle has been extended with \n ACTC<\/strong> (ActiveChipThicknessControl) to actively control chip thickness. VoluTurn handles this by continuously varying the feed rate during different toolpath moves.<\/p>\n

Extended Threading<\/h4>\n

The Thread Turning cycles have been extended<\/strong> to support threading in the front plane (radial thread). In addition, threading with variable pitch, multi-pitch and also extended contact point control. The user can now create threads with or without taper and with or without variable pitch. A thread operation can contain several different segments, with different thread pitches.<\/p>\n

Parallel to the many new toolpaths in Turning also more options have been added for insert description<\/strong>. The user can now define both rake and back angle on cutting inserts to correctly simulate everything in 3D. In addition, the Elliptical Turning function<\/strong> can now be used also for internal turning.<\/p>\n

\nNew cycles for threads with variable pitch and threading in the front plane<\/p>\n

Simplified Rotary Milling<\/h4>\n

Cylindrical Milling<\/strong> in GibbsCAM 2023 has become easier and faster as diametric groove edges can now be selected directly on the solid model. Select a closed profile to machine an island or pocket, or select two slot edges to machine the area between them, without having to create any geometry\/drawing from the solid model. New Hole Machining method<\/strong> \"radial spiral\" allows higher feeds and increased cutdepth to be used when machining holes, as the load on the tool is now more constant. In addition, the pocket milling can now completely avoid areas where diving into material is necessary, for those situations where you want to rough mill, for example with a high-feed milling cutter, without ramping down.<\/p>\n

New drillcycles, new tools<\/h4>\n

GibbsCAM 2023 extens the standard drilling cycles<\/strong> with several new cycles. Gundrilling, drilling with variable chip breaking and chip breaking threading. In addition, a new tool type has been added, a so-called MFD multifunction drill<\/strong>. This tool can be used for both turning and drilling operations (with, for example, the Sandvik Coromant CoroDrill\u00ae 880 series). The multifunction tool can seamlessly switch between turning, turndrilling and milldrilling without having to leave the part or make a tool change. Lathe drilling can now also be performed with a rotating lathe spindle and counter-rotating tools, so-called \"Turbodrilling\". A very efficient method that significantly cuts run time.<\/p>\n

A number of new features for Machine management<\/strong> includes the ability to set tool change position based on different origins. This includes the ability to set tool change based on part origin, part station, machine or tool carrier. During simulation, it is now also possible to detect collisions that occur with feed moves and to receive a warning if high-feed moves are made in the workpiece. In addition, the simulation has extended display functions for fixture components.<\/p>\n

Finally,\u00a0new functions for organizing<\/strong> workgroups and coordinate systems give the user better overview of the programming. Operations can be set as active\/inactive with a right click. Inactive operations mean that they are ignored both during simulation and posting, which provides speed and adds control.
